The Happy Ones

Lying on the couch,
waiting for my Saturday morning
racquetball call.

Noticed a middle-aged
woman in a gold blazer
walking onto my front porch.

“You weren’t expecting me, sir,”
she said. “I just want to ask you:
do you think those who

try to follow God’s laws
could be happier?”
I replied with conviction:

“I’m pretty sure nothing could make
those people any happier.
And thanks for your time.”

“Thank you, sir,” she said,
and retreated
toward the street
