Unlooked-for

In ’77, I think, I got an efficiency
with my roommate Dave
in Dinkytown north of Bierman Field.
Can’t remember the street name.
When we were moving in,
I was sitting by myself in the room,
on a box, I believe.
I looked up, and there was a beautiful
almost-adolescent, long-haired
orange-and-white kitten.
What a gift! I thought,
and then, by ones and twos,
the rest of the long-haired
orange-and-white kittens arrived—
surprize after surprize—
to the number of six.
They checked me out for a little while,
then sauntered away.
