Embarrassing Success

What if I wanted to attain enlightenment
and found out I already had it?
Would I be disappointed?
Would it be like power without its accoutrements—
the right to say, Off with their heads, if
you please? Wordsworth wanted to cross Simplon
Pass, but found out
he’d already done it.
He was disappointed—
but then a wild astonishment
seized him that much resembled
the glad rush of enlightenment
itself. And I'm hoping there'll be emoluments—
jewels in my crown instead
of thornsand I’m not disappointed
when I think of your precious enbrightenment
and all the honey-dew I fed
on, those days I was seeking enlightenment.
Never disappointed.
