Sitting on the Wall

The question is, which is to be master — that’s all. Humpty-Dumpty
You seek mastery of language,
but the joke's on you -
language has mastery.
Working in a factory
of words, like poor Simon
Weil, you seek mastery of language.
But you're not the Sheik of Araby -
the moon and stars knew,
language has mastery.
Nor susceptible to flattery
(but in fear of the Romans),
you seek mastery of language -
to rule the world with me -
but you need to get the clue

that language has mastery.
Into my tent you'll creep
tonight -
to wail love's blues.
You seek mastery of language,
but language has mastery.
