I found a dimpled spider, fat and white,
On a white heal-all, holding up a moth Robert Frost

Hast thou utterly rejected Judah?
hath thy soul loathed Zion?
why hast thou smitten us, and there is no
healing for us?
we looked for peace, and there is no good;
and for the time of healing,
and behold trouble.

There is something smug
in today’s Virgina Episcopal Theological Seminary exhortation:
“This Advent, we will not be only self-centered
and pray for our own healing,
but HEAL the earth, we pray,
and her four elements that meet in us,
Earth, Air, Fire, and Water, what else?
for such is the eternal trance of God.”

I won’t undertake God’s
eternal trance.
God’s “trance” must pertain to “healing” somehow—
Yoga for right articulation of words and bones—
amid the urgency of so much
personal healing needed!
All those whose lives have been wrecked,
all the children raped by their fathers,
all the teenage suicides,
all the women who couldn’t say No clearly enough
to a powerful, fascinating man.

The Earth itself raped without
respect,
without regard, without restraint.
The Earth will not begin to heal
until maybe a century after we stop ravaging her at our will.
But why should we not lay her waste and steal her jewels?
We are the clever stewards whom God placed in charge.
God enjoins us to force the Earth
to want to die!
And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him,
Don’t talk to me about the
eternal trance of Godwithout regard, without restraint.

and that he might send them forth to preach,
And have power to heal sicknesses
and cast out devils.
