Brown House

written in about 1972 and typed from memory today

Live in a brown house,
leaving terror-eyed
new lands, rented units
of duplexes.
Brush about the house
deep leaves, fall sky.
Sudden, brusque,
train ride to safety.
Jewels in a case in
a bright-night department store
summer comes
long slow life of a toad in the sun.
Jewel-bright caterpillars
subtle
hang
from each bright leaf.
